Club Info

The Comeragh Mountaineering Club was founded in 1975 with the aim of encouraging and developing the safe enjoyment of all aspects of mountaineering. Since then the club has prospered and now has a membership of around 110.

The club’s activities centre mainly on a weekly Sunday walk, monthly indoor meetings, (see current programme, all indoor meetings will be held at 8:00 pm in the Munster bar unless otherwise stated.), bank-holiday weekends away, regular pub get-togethers, and annual social events such as a summer barbecue and Christmas “Holly and Hot Whiskey” walk and party. In addition some members are active rock climbers.

In general, weekly walks meet at the Hypermarket car park, Morgan Street, at 9:30am on Sunday. For walks in the Knockmealdowns, Galtees, and Wicklow, the meeting time is 09.00am.

PLEASE NOTE: ANYONE WISHING TO JOIN THE CLUB MUST CONTACT THE CLUB BEFORE TURNING UP FOR A WALK – YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO JOIN A WALK OTHERWISE. Please e-mail – comeraghmountaineeringclub@gmail.com

We have three grades of walks, Grade A, B and C, with A being the most difficult and C being suitable for those seeking an easy walk or for beginners. For further on walks grades details please click here. Each months walk program will contain a mix of these grades with the second and fourth Sunday of the month having a Grade C walk as well as one other Grade. Walks last 4 to 6 hours and cover distances of 3 to 10 miles, depending on the time of year, and weather conditions. After the walk, there is usually a get-together in a local pub. Occasionally, harder walks are organised – for club members only.

Mountaineering is a strenuous activity with a risk of personal injury, even death. Participants must be reasonably fit and be prepared to spend several hours on the hills. All walks include demanding ascents (obviously!) with medium/hard walks involving two or more. All walkers are advised, as a minimum, they should have a strong pair of boots, waterproof jacket and leggings, a packed lunch – inc. a hot drink – and some warm clothing e.g. hat, gloves, etc, all of which should be carried in a rucksack. For further details on gear please click here.

Unfortunately, due to the duration and demanding nature of hill walking club membership is not open to anyone under 18 years of age.

The Clubs website is updated regularly and provides members with the walks programme and details of other club activities, club members can submit articles of interest, walks reports, photos etc for inclusion on the website.

Club members meet in the Munster Bar on Thursday nights, and as already mentioned, monthly indoor meetings are held on the 1st Thursday of the month. This usually consists of a slide show or a talk by a visiting speaker or a club member on some aspect of mountaineering. The club provides training for its members each year, e.g. basic navigation skills, mountain safety etc.

The club is affiliated to the Mountaineering Council of Ireland (M.C.I.) which is the umbrella body of mountaineering in Ireland. Members receive insurance cover and a quarterly magazine “The Mountain Log” as well as discount facilities with outdoor shops, hostels, etc.

The Clubs AGM is held in September and the membership year runs from 1st Oct. to 30th Sept. Current membership costs is €50. This includes your affiliation to the M.C.I. as outlined above (cost €35 per person). If you are a member in another hiking club & have a current MI number, you may join us as an Associate – €15.
